Serve for positioning before you optimise.

A smooth website project is not only about good design. It is shaped by clear decisions, focused communication, and a process that keeps everyone moving in the same direction.

Much of marketing management focuses on current performance. Which campaign is delivering? Which segment is converting? Which channel deserves more investment? Those questions matter, but they describe where value is being created today.

The more strategic responsibility is anticipating where value will be created next. Customer behaviour changes, competitors reposition and distribution shifts. By the time those changes are clearly visible in performance data, the strongest opportunity may already have moved elsewhere.

This is where the best CMOs distinguish themselves. They do not simply respond well to the market in front of them. They build a view of where the market is going and position the organisation before the answer becomes obvious.

Anticipation requires a wider view

The signals that matter rarely sit in a single marketing dashboard. Changes in search behaviour, customer language, sales conversations, pricing sensitivity, competitor investment and product adoption can all indicate that the market is beginning to move.

The CMO should be responsible for connecting those signals. The objective is not to predict the future with certainty, but to identify meaningful shifts early enough to create strategic options.

That also requires accepting that some decisions will be made before the evidence is complete. If an opportunity is fully proven, competitors can see it too. Strategic advantage often comes from forming a better judgement with incomplete information.

Position before you optimise

Once an organisation has chosen where to compete, optimisation becomes valuable. Before that point, optimisation can create false confidence. A business can become extremely efficient at competing in an area that is gradually becoming less important.

CMOs therefore need to separate questions of position from questions of performance. Which customers will matter most? Which needs are becoming more valuable? Where is competition weakening? Which capabilities will the business require two or three years from now?

The best marketing leaders are not simply trying to win the current point. They are thinking about where the next one will be played and ensuring the organisation is already in position when it arrives.
